I would download and run the diagnostic tools (CD edition) first. Looking into possible firmware later tonight or early tomorrow for you.

I can't find anything even related to firmware for this disk.

I couldn't find anything either. But I had this happened before (not finding HDD firmware, I mean). Maybe you're not supposed to do that. Or they want you to either buy a new one or send in the old one so they can charge you double of what a new one would cost.
But maybe it wasn't even a firmware issue.Could be a really weird chain of coincidences that are not reproducible. The PSU could also be responsible (voltage spike/drop) or the filesystem was corrupted. Or a combination of several things.
I would definitely not keep anything on that drive without a backup. But I would not do that with any drive anyway.
Um... They want you to have updated Firmware on drives since if a bug exists and you lose your data (like it appears has happened) they want to point out an update was available vs losing a customer and having a possible lawsuit due to an issue like that. There is no reason to not offer firmware updates, even for monetary reasons, it just isn't worth the risk to customers.

I thought about Advanced Format, too. But that should only destroy performance, not the data.
You never know, odd things happen all the time from the oddest causes. If the jumpers are not proper, there can go data/stability.

WD drives are among the most expensive to conduct data recovery on since their spindles are attached to the cover. It requires very specialized work. So in the event of a hard drive crash where data recovery is required, a Seagate drive will save you around $1,000.
