Registering your nick on IRC / Chat

#1
Registering your nick (username) ensures nobody else can impersonate you in the Category5 TV Community Chat Room (and other Freenode-hosted IRC chats). It's easy to do and only requires you have a valid email address (to confirm the account, or recover it if you ever lose your password).

Our chat room is hosted on Freenode's IRC servers.

When you register your chat nickname, you are not registering with Category5. Rather, you are registering with Freenode. We are in no way related. They simply provide the [excellent] chat services to our community.

Server: irc.freenode.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #Category5
Connect Without IRC Client: https://category5.tv/chat/

Initial Nickname Setup (From the Freenode Documentation, only needs to be done once)
The following steps are the recommended method to register and set up a new freenode account. If you have questions or doubts about the process, a member of staff will be happy to discuss it and answer any questions you may have.

1) Select a permanent nickname. If the nickname you want is already taken, you'll notice when connecting to our chat, your name will change to a Guest account after a few minutes.

2)Register your IRC nick:
Code:
/msg NickServ REGISTER password [email protected]

Replace password with a secure, unguessable password that you keep secret. The email address that you select will not be given out by staff, and is mainly used to allow us to help you recover the account in the event that you forget your password. For this reason, you are required to use a real, non-disposable, email address. Upon registering, you will receive an email with a verification command that you will need to run to complete the registration process. Failure to verify the account will cause it to be automatically dropped after about 24 hours.

From thence forward, you will need to provide the password in order to sign in (our web chat has a password checkbox, or your IRC client will have something similar).

Now, nobody else can sign in as you.
